Welcome to Murph Talks

Hello everyone. My name’s Dale Murphy. During my career in the Major Leagues, I was known among reporters as a pretty boring interview...I guess I just never had much to say. But no more! After almost 18 years of retirement, I’m excited to be officially joining the blogosphere.

Believe it or not, I’m a grandpa now, and I’m closing in on 60 years old. People often ask me what I’m doing these days, where I’m living, and just generally what’s going on in my life. That’s where this blog comes in. Honestly, it’s a little intimidating for someone like me—someone who’s always kept their private life, well, private—to start laying it all out there in a blog, so bear with me as I get the hang of this thing. Of course, when I was playing, my performance on the field was always public, but, you know, it’s a whole different thing to have your ideas and opinions out there for everyone to see. So here goes nothing.

I’ll be blogging on a bunch of different subjects, from baseball to politics to raising kids and back again. I’ll probably throw in a few movie and music reviews, too, just to keep things interesting. Because more than anything I want to keep it interesting. And, who knows, maybe even a little bit surprising sometimes, too, like next post when I talk about my undying love of big-haired heavy metal bands (just kidding).

I’m not all that technology-savvy, so my son Chad will be helping me organize these posts. Thanks to him for that. My wife, Nancy, as always will be providing key logistical and moral support, such as making sure my jokes are funny enough for primetime. Thanks, Nanc.

And thank you for reading.

  5. As one of the key people I chose to emulate as a boy, I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts, not only on sports, but life in general. Thanks, Murph!

  6. I'm a 40-year old mother of two boys, and LONG time Braves fan. My dad, who passed away when I was 16, started me on Spring Training games in WPB when I was 8. Number 3 in the baby blue unis was my absolute favorite Brave, and I am thrilled to read your blog posts. Here's to hoping we have more role-model-worthy professional athletes like you sir! Love you Murph!!

  8. Dale, like many out there, long-time fan. My most prized possession is still the rookie card you signed for me.

I want to wish you luck with this. Having blogged myself, I know that blogging can be a challenge after the first few months(I have 1 active & 1 dormant blog). There is a list of all sorts of things that you want to share, but as those things are shared, new things are where the work comes into play.

My advice, have fun. Chime in on current issues (like you did with Posada). Most importantly, create dialogs. That will hold your interest the most.

Good luck. I'm glad you are posting as the world needs as many positive influences that it can get.

  9. Murph, when my little girl Katie was about 6, she knew more about the Atlanta braves than most adults. She LOVED you and followed your career for a long time. She was very sad when you left the Braves and still talks about you fondly. As a matter of fact, she is now married, lives in Atlanta and works for VOX (www.voxrox.com), a place for teenagers to learn and work together to produce a high quality magazine for their peers. She always wanted to meet you and still loves the Braves. She follows your blog, and just found out you all both love the same music! The reason for this post is, if you are ever in Atlanta and want to do a nice thing for some kids, I wish you would give VOX a call and talk to her. She would love to introduce you to the kids and now that you are blogging, you could talk to them about that aspect of your life. She just graduated from UGA Graduate School with a masters in Social Work. Not only does she work with the kids on the magazine (she was editor of her high school and college yearbooks, and worked at Paste Magazine for a while), but she also councils them on problems they face (most are at-risk kids) and how to deal with them as they grow up. VOX is a great program and Katie is a great lady, so any words of encouragement you could give her and/or the kids would be great. They are located in downtown Atlanta. Thanks so much for all you did to make her growing up years happy ones, and for all you are doing now to make a difference.

  11. I'm a big fan and grew up on Braves baseball. Still love them to this day. When I was preparing to go on my mission, you had just been called as a mission president. I dreamt one night you were my mission president. Best dream ever but instead I was sent to Seoul South Korea and I loved it. So funny that I still remember that dream :). Keep blogging. I love it!

  12. I look forward to reading your musings. I've long been a great fan of yours. I even had a class with your son, Shawn, back in the days at Northwestern Elementary School in Alpharetta. It's great to see you're going strong -- maybe the Braves need a September call-up?

  16. Murph, Thought i would take a moment to drop a blog here, and let you know the influance that you as a player and a person have had on my life.As a youngster i had every card and magazine that you were ever mentioned in.In my eyes you were the best player there ever was.My freshman year in collage our baseball team had a bad drug problem and I would be forced to transfer to another school. I decided to send you a letter about my problem. To my amazement I got a letter back from you letting me know things were not so bad and i just needed to be me.I tried to follow the letter the best I could. In the next few years things turned out just like you said they would. I never made the show but I can honestly say I wasn't good enough. In closing I would like to say. I am a adult now with 3 wonderful kids and a
great wife. I have all the Braves retired numbers tatooed on my arm with large number 3 as the center piece. I just want to thank you for being the person that you are and for answering a little kids letter in his trying times..Let me know if you are in the Kansas City area I would love to shake your hand and thank you in person...Thanks again Tim

  19. Wow, glad to have found this. Dale, you remain my all time favorite player. The stories of your character influenced my life and still do to this day. My kids don't know it but their lives are influenced by you as well. Thank you so much for all the wonderful years that you were a Brave. So many memories growing up in Texas listening to the Braves on an AM radio and then watching when we got cable tv. Funny that I ended up in Roswell right down the street from where you lived here in Atlanta.

    Thanks again, David

  20. I too am glad to have found this. I still wear #3 in your honor in my softball leagues. My wish is to meet you someday. I have told my stepson all about you because he loves baseball over everything else. He is now a catcher just like you when you started out. He is getting letters form Colleges and he is just started his Sophomore year in High School. Thanks for reading this. Alex
